In the same week chaos broke loose in Afghanistan, many in the Twittersphere were caught up in another development: an anti-mask tweet liked my country music star Carrie Underwood.
On Wednesday, a mob of angry social media users directed their ire at the 38-year-old entertainer after she “liked” a tweet from Daily Wire writer and podcast host Matt Walsh, who shared a portion of his recent speech in front of the school board in Nashville, where both he and Underwood live.
He condemned “the cruel and indefensible mask mandate for children.”
Walsh argued COVID-19 — even amid the Delta variant — poses “almost no risk to our kids at all,” noting that, although more than 4 million children have contracted the virus, “a total of 0.008% of them have died.”
He went on to accuse the board of simply playing politics.
“You do it to make yourselves feel better and to protect yourselves politically,” Walsh said. “The child’s mask is a symbolic security blanket for you — not them. It’s a disgrace and you should all be ashamed.”
While Walsh’s speech drew quite a bit of media attention itself, the commentator’s words were quickly eclipsed by Underwood’s decision to “like” his tweet.
“Carrie Underwood being an anti-masker is just sad,” wrote one Twitter user. “The only country singer I know I can trust is Dolly Parton.”

Another persona accused the singer-songwriter of “helping spread anti-mask [and] anti-vax misinformation.” Of course, it should be noted Underwood has neither said — nor tweeted — anything herself; she simply “liked” a tweet by Walsh.
“Carrie Underwood being a God-over-Science person is the least surprising thing I’ve heard today,” tweeted leftist pastor John Pavlovitz.
Describing her as “an anti-masker,” someone else commented of Underwood, “She’s canceled in my book. Who else’s?”
“Not sure why I’m surprised by Carrie Underwood liking Matt Walsh’s anti-mask tweets, but I used to call in the maximum amount of time to vote for her on American Idol season 4, so … big wake-up call for my 10-year-old self,” wrote leftist pundit Emma Vigeland.
Not all of the responses to Underwood have been negative, though.
The “Before He Cheats” singer has also received support from people like fellow singer Danny Gokey, who condemned cancel culture as “a cancer to society,” tweeting he “fully support[s]” Underwood.
“Carrie Underwood liked a video about kids not being forced to wear masks — a position totally supported by data — and she’s being called an anti-vaxxer,” tweeted conservative author and podcaster Allie Stuckey. “In case you thought your ‘nuanced’ takes would save you from the leftist cancel mob, they won’t.”

Gad Saad, an evolutionary psychologist from Canada, also came to Underwood’s defense, writing, “I hope that Carrie Underwood won’t start an apology tour. Active your inner honey badger. Stand your ground.”
WEX Magazine managing editor Jay Caruso condemned people for spending more time focusing on a tweet “liked” by Underwood than on the tragic events unfolding in Afghanistan.
“We’re leaving thousands to die in Afghanistan with desperate people clinging to military airplanes to escape, later falling to their deaths, or dying in the landing gear,” he wrote. “Good to know that what really lights the [expletive] of the very online crowd is Carrie Underwood ‘liking’ a tweet.”
In a tweet of his own, Walsh responded to Underwood’s action.
“Carrie Underwood ‘liked’ my video and now the mob is coming for her,” he wrote. “She should know better than to like something that they don’t like. This is an unforgivable sin.”
