A California woman is praising a good Samaritan who rescued her from a flame-engulfed vehicle last Wednesday.
Kristine Smith was in the car with her granddaughter and husband when they heard a “pop,” and their car suddenly burst into flames. The situation devolved so quickly that Smith, who recently had knee surgery, couldn’t get out.

Smith assumed no one would dare stop to help due to the size of the flames.
“It could have blown at any time. It went that fast,” Smith told KCRA-TV. “I wasn’t thinking of anybody stopping in that situation because the fire was so big.”
But Smith was wrong. A brave man named Elton Ward was traveling down the road with his daughter, saw the inferno — and pulled over to help. In fact, Ward risked his own life and rushed over to pull Smith out of the car.
“We see this car in flames, so I’m like, ‘That’s insane,'” Ward told KCRA-TV, noting the rescue happened just in time. “Literally in a matter of 30 seconds, boom, first explosion, loud, big, big explosion.”
He continued, “Then when that explosion happened, huge flames came up.”
As for Smith’s part, she’s grateful to Ward and God for her rescue.
“Thank the good Lord, he sent me a good Samaritan that stopped for me,” she said.
Ward and Smith had a reunion over the weekend, and she again thanked him for his kindness.
The two, who now have a bond, plan to keep in touch. She quipped, “You became my grandson that day,” showcasing how close the two became after the life-threatening incident.
First responders credit Ward for saving Smith’s life. Bravo to Ward for stopping to help someone in need and for risking his own life and safety in the process.
