Actor Eric Close, who has starred in movies and TV shows like “Indivisible, “Suits,” and “Nashville,” is a Christian who believes “God is in the midst of the mess of the world.”
Close’s new movie “The Mulligan,” a film about a successful businessman who fails at the things in life that really matter, is in select theaters nationwide April 18-19 through Fathom Events.
He recently told CBN’s Faithwire about the movie, his journey into Hollywood, and the moment he gave his life and career over to the Lord. In particular, Close shared a candid conversation with God that changed everything.
“I had graduated from college and I was sitting in my apartment,” Close said. “I felt kind of empty, just kind of lost. I just remember saying, ‘God, I don’t know if you want anything to do with me, but I miss you.'”
Despite committing his life to Christ as a teen, the actor had fallen away and wasn’t living for the Lord.
“God wasn’t a priority in my life,” Close said. “I knew He was there, but I wasn’t making Him No. 1.”
That simple prayer became a clarion moment for the actor and the starting point of a deeper and more fulfilling faith journey — one he has never looked back from.
“From there, my life just transformed,” Close said. “It was just supernatural.”
Considering the fame and attention that followed, Close said he’s not sure how things would have turned out had he not shifted his perspective back to the Lord.
“If I didn’t have that happen in my life, I don’t know where I would be today and what my life would look like,” he said.
And Close hasn’t looked back, even as his Hollywood career has grown over the years. In recent years, the actor has been able to do more in the faith entertainment space, with his new movie, “The Mulligan,” offering an opportunity to explore eternal themes of significance.
“The backdrop is around the game of golf, but it’s not about golf,” Close said of the film. “It’s about life and the journey of some of the characters in this movie.”
One of the themes of “The Mulligan” — that “everybody needs a second chance” — will deeply resonate with everyone, Close said. He believes the movie inspires at a time when people desperately crave meaning.
“God’s in the midst of the mess of the world,” he said. “The world’s hungry for [stories of hope], especially right now after what we’ve been through.”

In an era when critics worry too many people are too self-focused, the actor noted that many — especially after the struggles of the past few years — are “reassessing what’s important.”
“There’s that scripture — what profits a person to gain the whole world and lose their soul,'” Close said. “This world offers so many things that can just pull you in so many directions.”
Like so many others, the actor knows the emptiness that can come when people seek the world’s avenues in their quest to find meaning and success.
“You get to the point where you realize nothing really fills that God hole in our souls other than God,” he said.
