The majority of Americans believe asking children to select a “preferred pronoun” is confusing and think kids ought to be identified by their biological sex, according to a new survey.

When asked, “Do you think that kids should be able to pick their pronouns — he, she, or they — or do you think they should be called by their sex?” a majority of Americans — 59% — said children should be called by their sex. An additional 41% said they should be permitted to pick their pronouns.
Democrats were an anomaly in the data on this measure, with 61% saying kids should choose their pronouns, with just 39% calling for them to be called by their sex. Majorities of both Republicans (77%) and independents (64%) departed from Democrats and said kids should be called by their sex.
The survey results, conducted by Harvard’s Center for American Political Studies and Harris Poll, also measured the perceived confusion that comes from selective pronouns.
When asked if allowing children to choose pronouns prevents discrimination against transgender students or if it causes “confusion about [students’] sex,” 60% of Americans said it breeds confusion. Meanwhile, 40% said it “prevents discrimination.”
The survey also measured American voters’ opinions on whether teachers should be mandated to use preferred pronouns.
Respondents were asked, “Do you think teachers should be required to use pronouns that kids say they want used under penalty of losing their job, or should teachers have discretion to use pronouns as they see appropriate?”
In the end, 63% said “teachers should have discretion,” with just 37% saying educators should be required to use kids’ preferred pronouns.
As for potential penalties for people who “fail to use” selected pronouns, 73% said such misgendering should not be illegal, though 27% said it should be considered illegal discrimination.
The results, collected from May 18-19, 2022, were gathered among 1,963 registered voters. See the complete survey data here.
It should be noted that the survey’s release comes as culture fixates on the transgender issue. Regardless of cultural whims, the biblical view on gender and sexuality is clear, with God creating each individual with purpose and identity intended to be rooted in Him.
Genesis 1:27 states God created two sexes — male and female — and designed them to pro-create within the confines of marriage (Hebrews 13:4). In 1 Corinthians 6:18, the Apostle Paul urged believers to “flee from sexual immorality,” continuing, “Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body” (ESV).
