Texas A&M pitcher Nathan Dettmer believes all his worth comes “through God” and that the Lord has a plan for his life, openly proclaiming these truths during a post-game press conference Tuesday.

“A good friend, [teammate] Micah Dallas. He texted me that from one game, it doesn’t define me. It doesn’t define me as a person. And baseball doesn’t really define me as a person,” Dettmer, a sophomore, said. “All my worth is through God. I just prayed to Him that night.”
He continued, “And He just told me that that’s not my story. He’s got a plan for me and that one game wasn’t it. And sure enough. I just have to trust in His plan.”

The Aggies player’s comments came after he and his team celebrated beating Notre Dame 44-19 in a College World Series elimination game Tuesday, the Associated Press reported.
The prayer he mentioned, though, was uttered during a tough time Friday after a harsh defeat. Dettmer and his team lost to Oklahoma that day, and the 18-8 flop left him feeling like he let fellow players down.
Dettmer, who felt “terrible,” found himself in his hotel room that night in tears and feeling lost. But Tuesday’s victory — and Dallas’ encouraging text — helped change that dynamic.
“To come back and have coach give me the ball just two games later, all that confidence just flowed through me, and to know they trust me … all I had to do was believe in myself,” Dettmer said. “That’s what happened and had some success today.”
Dettmer also posted a photo on Instagram Tuesday of him looking at the sky and pointing upward. The caption read, “Proverbs 3:5 — Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.”
This is a simple yet powerful sports story. Dettmer’s praise of the Lord and his discussion about identity are certainly commendable. But the other part of the story that hasn’t gotten as much attention is his friend and teammate, Dallas, who went out of his way to encourage Dettmer in the Lord.
Considering these are college students playing a competitive sport, it’s powerful to see their reliance on God and their quest to boost one another in the faith. Bravo, Dettmer and Dallas!
