Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is outraged after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade Friday, the 1973 high court case that legalized abortion nationwide.
Ocasio-Cortez warned during a “Meet the Press” interview Sunday that the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling is a “crisis of our democracy” and also called for justices to be impeached if they lied under oath.

At the center of the vocal congresswoman’s angst is her contention some conservative justices lied during confirmation hearings when asked how — if placed on the Supreme Court — they would handle Roe v. Wade and abortion rights.
“If we allow Supreme Court nominees to lie under oath and secure lifetime appointments to the highest court of the land and then issue without basis … rulings that deeply undermine the human and civil rights of the majority of Americans, we must see that through,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
She continued, “There must be consequences for such a deeply destabilizing action and hostile takeover of our democratic institutions … This is a crisis of legitimacy.”

Ocasio-Cortez said lying to Congress is “impeachable” and sends a message to future nominees that they, too, can be dishonest while testifying about how they would handle issues on the bench.
It’s important to note that this theme of Supreme Court justices lying has persisted among many members of liberal and Democratic circles. It was so pervasive that fact-checking website Snopes tackled the issue in May, specifically exploring whether the “justices dishonestly suggested, in Senate confirmation hearings, that they thought Roe v. Wade was beyond overturning.”

Snopes rated the claim “false” and dove into specific statements made during confirmation hearings, extrapolating what was said, the intent, and how to understand what each justice was postulating.
Here’s a snippet of the explanation from Snopes:
In brief, describing a ruling as an important precedent is not tantamount to giving a commitment not to overturn that ruling, or indicating you believe that ruling cannot be overruled. Therefore, the sweeping allegations of premeditated dishonesty on the part of GOP-appointed justices were as poorly supported by evidence as they were wrongheaded.

Politifact also noted that Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett all said Roe was precedent during confirmation hearings — but that they never said it was untouchable.
“While all three paid homage to precedence and described Roe as such during their confirmation hearings, none said precedents are untouchable or that Roe was cast in stone,” the outlet proclaimed. “Asked if they considered Roe to be a “super precedent,” Barrett said no, and Gorsuch didn’t give a direct answer. Kavanaugh, under questioning from an anti-abortion senator, said he would be willing to hear arguments that a precedent is wrong.”
Ocasio-Cortez has also taken to Twitter since the ruling and has unveiled her dissatisfaction with the Dobbs decision, proclaiming Sunday, “Forced pregnancy is a crime against humanity.”

Ocasio-Cortez also encouraged men to speak up in defense of abortion, arguing their lives, too, have “benefited” from the procedure.
“Let’s be real: there’s a WHOLE lot of men whose lives, careers, and families have benefited from an abortion (including several ‘pro-life’ GOP Congressmen),” she tweeted. “Men, we need you right now. You can get through in rooms others can’t. Your power matters. Speak up. This is about us all.”
