Trent Lachance, 21, saw the horrific scene in McGregor, Minnesota, while driving through the area, dropped his car, and was forced to make a “split-second decision.”
Lachance quickly jumped into the ditch, where the overturned truck was mostly submerged in water, to join others in trying to free the family trapped inside.
“I pulled over and got out and jumped down there and did everything I possibly could,” he told KMSP-TV. “I could hear the mom screaming, and that just kind of boosted adrenaline in me.”
Lachance broke open a window and helped pull the mother and her baby out; a nurse who also stopped to help then performed CPR on the infant, according to the outlet.
“I’m glad for everybody who was there at the right time that they did what they did to make sure these kids survived,” Lachance said.
The hero also worked diligently to try and free the woman’s 3-year-old child, cutting his seatbelt to try and get him out.
Unfortunately, Lachance struggled to free the child, though someone else was able to attach a chain to the truck and overturn it to get the boy out.
The mother and baby are expected to recover, though the 3-year-old boy was in critical condition after the rescue. Pray for the family as they navigate recovery.
