In a recent appearance on the “Let’s Talk Purity Podcast,” Broome spoke about the power and importance of purity when it comes to social media — a challenge for many in today’s era.
Broome encouraged people to set boundaries and spoke about everything from influence to guarding one’s heart against the pitfalls of curiosity. On the influence front, the preacher spoke about the importance of not believing in one’s own power or hype.
“It’s so easy to believe that you have influence because of you,” Broome said. “You don’t. You have the hand of God in your life. God is working through you.”
Broome also addressed time management, yet another conundrum social media can breed. In an era in which people can be prone to aimlessly scrolling through photos and videos, he encouraged listeners to solidify good time management — something he said Christ was good at.
But perhaps the biggest issue when it comes to social media is guarding one’s heart.
Listen to Broome discuss these matters:
“It’s important for us to put boundaries in our lives,” Broome said, citing safeguards he and his wife have that help build trust. “Her iPad is connected to my phone, so she sees my text messages, for the most part.”
He encouraged people to be careful on social media when it comes to the content they look at and consume, particularly when it comes to direct messages and other points of contact.
“Don’t do dumb things. Don’t open up every direct message,” Broome said. “Don’t let curiosity lead you in a place you know you shouldn’t.”
Host Richard De La Mora affirmed this point with a simple proclamation: “Don’t play with temptation.”
Listen to Broome’s podcast as well where he discusses these issues:
Even if someone is prevailing at avoiding pornography, Broome reminded listeners there are plenty of other issues that can challenge a person’s purity of heart and mind.
“Don’t be fooled to believe that your heart is pure just because you’re not succumbing to pornography,” he said. “You could be looking for affirmation, you could be struggling with pride, you can make ministry an idol.”
He continued, “Your heart is deceitful.”
Broome encouraged people to pray a convicting invocation — one that can have a positive impact on an individual’s life: “God, show me my inadequacies.” That prayer, he said, can transform everything.
“That’s where freedom is found,” he said. “It’s through surrender.”
