Police said good Samaritans tackled Marcus Conway, 24, after he allegedly wrestled with the victim and they feared he would shoot him again.
Fortunately, the gun jammed and passersby got involved to try to stop the alleged assault.
“No! No! No! Stop!” at least one eyewitness shouted, according to WJLA-TV. “Don’t do it!”
One person kicked Conway while others piled on top of him in an effort to stop him.
“They were kind of laying on him. They had him pinned to the ground,” witness Jason Morales told WRC-TV. “Some of them were even, I guess, kind of beating on him as well. I saw one man kicking him. I saw someone else punching the guy as well.”
Watch the shocking scene (caution: disturbing):
Officials with the Montgomery Country Department of Police released a statement noting they arrived at the scene to find the accused restrained.
“Upon arrival, officers observed a man suffering from multiple injuries to his body and bleeding from what appeared to be gunshot wounds,” read a police statement. “Officers also observed the suspect, Marcus Elijah Conway restrained by multiple witnesses at the scene.”
These quick-thinking moves might have saved the victim’s life. According to the cops, witnesses at one point saw the accused purportedly point a revolver at the victim’s head.
“There was an audible click, as if the gun misfired,” the statement continued. “At that time, a bystander kicked Conway and began fighting him over the gun.”
The victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Conway, who WJLA-TV noted has an extensive criminal history, reportedly faces attempted murder charges over the incident.
