The horrific assault unfolded around 2 a.m. Sunday in Flushing, Queens, where a 47-year-old victim was reportedly knocked to the ground in a “random” attack.
The accused would have allegedly raped the woman had a stranger passing by not intervened to stop the attack, WNBC-TV reported.
Security footage shows the man knocking the victim to the ground before the unnamed hero intervened.
The accused, Wilson Kim, 41, reportedly took off running after the good Samaritan got involved, and was apprehended Thursday, according to The Patch.
He is reportedly being charged with sex abuse, forcible touching, attempted rape, and assault and sexual misconduct.
Stunned residents told WNBC-TV they consider the neighborhood “safe” and were shaken by the incident.
“I’m shocked,” one resident named Zunair Sabir said. “Around this area, you don’t see any crimes over here … It’s scary.”
Others praised the heroism of the individual who helped out, noting it can be frightening to intervene in such an overt way.
“I think that’s incredibly brave … you never know what’s going to happen to you,” resident Danielle Park said. “To take an action other than calling for help, calling for police. I think that’s incredibly brave.”
The victim was subsequently treated by emergency workers and reportedly suffered minor injuries.
