A doctor who performed hundreds of abortions before becoming a Christian and speaking out against the procedure said it’s “categorically untrue” women need late-term abortions to save their lives.

Some pro-choice activists have seemingly argued against restrictions on abortion later in pregnancy on the basis the life of a mother could be in danger and, thus, she would require third-trimester terminations.
“The quick answer is: it’s categorically untrue and it is illogical to say that,” Dr. Vansen Wong, an OB-GYN for three decades, recently told CBN’s Faithwire. “After viability, so after 22 weeks, a baby could survive.”
Wong explained the survival rate at 23 weeks isn’t as good as at 35 weeks but offered a hypothetical example to explain why the need for late-term abortion to save a mother’s life makes little sense.
“Let’s pull out a hypothetical,” he said. “A woman gets diagnosed with cervical cancer at 23 weeks. In order to start treatment as soon as possible, we’ve got to end the pregnancy so that she can begin her treatment combination of surgery and radiation that is incompatible with pregnancy. The process at 23 weeks would be to induce the labor and, lo and behold, you’d get a live baby.”
Wong continued, “So, there is never any reason that you have to end a baby’s life after viability for the welfare of a mother, because, if the welfare of the mother is at stake, you would induce her labor.”
Watch Wong explain these issues:
The doctor has also been speaking out against California’s Proposition 1, which would add abortion rights to the state’s constitution. Wong believes the amendment would potentially allow abortions up through labor.
Voters will be deciding on the matter during Tuesday’s election.
“Proposition one is a constitutional amendment that says that abortion and contraceptives are a right for all Californians to have,” Wong said. “The problem is that abortion is not defined in the same way as it has been defined in law. So, in law, the definition of abortion is up to the point of fetal viability.”
