The Church of the Redeemed of the Lord in Baltimore subsequently thanked parishioners for helping thwart the assailant and keep him at bay until police arrived.
Bishop Jerome Stokes was reportedly assaulted during the Nov. 20 service in what could have been a more serious attack.
According to Church Leaders, the 78-year-old preacher received only a minor injury to his ear.
The individual responsible is reportedly 55 years old and might have been suffering from a mental health crisis at the time of the attack, authorities said.
The church publicly commented on the incident on its Facebook page last week, acknowledging the attack and revealing Stokes is recovering.
“This past Sunday, our corporate worship experience was interrupted as someone assaulted our pastor. Dr. Stokes is feeling better and recovering from his injuries,” the post read. “We appreciate the quick response of those parishioners who apprehended the individual.”
The church said the safety of parishioners is “of paramount importance” and that the church is assessing current safety parameters.
“Please pray for everyone impacted by Sunday’s incident,” the house of worship concluded.
Continue to pray for Stokes as he recovers from the incident.
