While promoting abortion, Vice President Kamala Harris omitted a critical right from the Declaration of Independence.
On Sunday, Harris was in Florida, where she delivered a speech attacking Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and conservatives, whom she called “extremists” for advocating for life over abortion.
During the address, which came on the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court’s since-reversed ruling granting nationwide legal cover to abortion, the vice president quoted the Declaration of Independence — but left out the “right to life.”
“We are here together because we collectively believe and know America is a promise,” Harris said. “America is a promise. It is a promise of freedom and liberty — not for some, but for all. A promise we made in the Declaration of Independence that we are each endowed with the right to liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
The actual text of the Declaration of Independence states:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
Harris went on to specifically call out Republicans seeking “a nationwide abortion ban.”
“Some even from the moment of conception, the right of every woman in every state in this country to make decisions about her own body is on the line,” she said. “And I’ve said it before, and I will say it again: How dare they!”
The vice president added that, in her view, a woman cannot “truly be free” unless she can have abortions.

“America is the land of the free and the home of the brave,” she said. “But let us ask, can we truly be free if a woman cannot make decisions about her own body? Can we truly be free if the doctor cannot care for her patients? Can we truly be free if families cannot make intimate decisions about the course of their own life? And can we truly be free if so-called leaders claim to be, ‘on the vanguard of freedom,’ while they dare to restrict the rights of the American people and attack the very foundations of freedom?”
Harris’ speech in Florida came just two days after the 50th March for Life, the first pro-life march in Washington, D.C., since Roe was overturned, sending the fight for life from the federal to the state level.
