The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office posted photos and a description of the Feb. 4 incident involving an 83-year-old driver and his dog.
According to authorities, five men — Joe Salmon, Corey McConnell, Kody Harrelson, Cody Chester, and Chris Parks — came together to brave the frigid temperatures and rescue the victim, Thomas Lee, and his pooch, Cooper.
Fortunately, everyone walked away unscathed.
“The driver was transported to [a hospital] and is doing well,” the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office wrote. “The dog was dried out and is doing well.”
Salmon, 17, was ice fishing and watching snowmobile races when the incident unfolded. He reportedly jumped into the water as soon as he noticed the Jeep had gone through the ice.
His bravery certainly shines through, considering his young age. Salmon not only dialed 911, but smashed a window with a knife to get Cooper out of the car.
The rescue was captured on drone footage:
Had Salmon and others not intervened, there’s no telling what could have happened, as Lee was stuck inside the vehicle.
Lee later expressed gratitude for these heroes’ actions.
“I want to thank the people who helped and the store that took the dog in and dried him off,” he told the Des Moines Register.
As for Salmon, he told the outlet this experience was a first for him.
“I’m happy that he was OK and the dog was OK,” the teen said. “It was just crazy at the time. I’ve never done anything like that.”
