Chris Hemsworth has become a household name for a generation of Marvel fans, but the “Thor” star is reevaluating his priorities after a recent Disney+ series, and may take on fewer acting roles as a result.
The 39-year-old celebrity underwent a battery of genetic tests for “Limitless,” a National Geographic and Disney+ docuseries he hosted, and learned he carries the APOE4 gene, significantly increasing his likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

“Doing an episode on death and facing your own mortality made me go, ‘Oh, God, I’m not ready to go yet,’” Hemsworth said in a November interview with Vanity Fair. “I want to sit and be in this space with a greater sense of stillness and gratitude.”
“And then you start talking about kids and family and going, ‘Oh, my God, they’re getting older, they’re growing up and I keep slapping another movie on top of another movie,’” he continued. “Before you know it, they’re 18 and they’ve moved out of house, and I missed the window.”
While Hemsworth has been hinting at a hiatus from acting for a while, a just-published report indicated it may be coming sooner rather than later — a decision no doubt tied to his recent health revelations.
According to a Page Six report, the Australian actor will likely step back from his Tinseltown career after he wraps his current projects, a Hulk Hogan biopic and his next appearance as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While Hemsworth said he is not talking about retiring, the celebrity did acknowledge the genetic testing he went through “triggered something” that led him to contemplate his priorities in life.
“[S]ince we finished the show, I’ve been completing the things I was already contracted to do,” he explained. “Now, when I finish this tour this week, I’m going home and I’m going to have a good chunk of time off and just simplify. Be with the kids, be with my wife.”
