Arturo Castrejon was driving in the car with a friend when he saw the shocking sight.
Video footage shows the 74-year-old man swiftly being carried through the water — until Castrejon hopped out of the car to help.
“It was hard to see him, because his clothes were brown, water and mud, it was brown,” he told KVVU-TV. “So, it was hard to see him, but we were able to see him.”
Castrejon said he didn’t give a second thought before taking potentially life-saving action.
“I didn’t even think twice,” he said. “I was like, ‘I got to do something for him. I got to save him.'”
The rescue was particularly bold and remarkable, because Castrejon said he doesn’t know how to swim. He acknowledges the situation could have been dangerous for him as well, but he felt compelled to get involved to help the elderly man.
So, he braved the waters and reached the man before ushering him to safety at a nearby home, where the homeless man, identified only as “David,” reportedly slept for the night.
“He was just telling me to not let him go, and I grabbed him [and said], ‘I won’t let you go,'” Castrejon added. “So, when I carried him, he started crying.”
Please pray for David, as his whereabouts and condition after leaving the home early the next morning are unknown. And let’s all give Castrejon a round of applause for his brave and selfless act.
