Travis DuPont was traveling home from work in Seminole, Florida, Sunday around 3:30 am., when he saw a vehicle had crashed into Second Time Around, a local consignment store.
DuPont jumped into immediate action when he realized flames were coming from the car and a man was inside.
“If I [had] been even, like, 30 seconds too late, he would have been in those flames,” he told WTVT-TV. “I just knew I had to act fast, especially when I heard the car was on fire.”
DuPont unbuckled the driver’s seatbelt through the window and pulled the driver out of the window before bringing him to a safe location.
The harrowing ordeal was captured on cell phone video by Stephanie Turow, a woman who said the situation was “scary” and the rescue unfolded with just seconds to spare.
Watch it all take place:
“It makes me want to cry now just because it was a very scary, very scary moment,” Turow told WTVT-TV. “[The driver] is very, very lucky to be alive.”
As for DuPont, the hero in the story, he said he hopes others would have the same “instinct to help.”
“I just hope that, when the going gets tough and that actually happens, everybody is capable of being a hero,” he said.
The driver of the car was allegedly drunk when the accident unfolded, though additional details were not immediately given.
As it turns out, this isn’t the first time Second Time Around was struck by a driver, as an inebriated driver crashed into the store in 2017 as well.
Owner Christa Cius said the situation “could have been horrific” but she and her team, despite the damage, were able to reopen after the accident.
“Everyone’s alive,” she said. “The shop is a strong little shop. It’s been around for 35 years.”
