Police in Maine have been searching for a good Samaritan who reportedly pulled a victim from a burning vehicle earlier this week and left before first responders arrived on the scene.

The York County Sheriff’s Office posted a Facebook message Tuesday explaining what happened. The agency also asked the public for help finding the supposed hero.
“Last night, deputies responded to a motor vehicle accident on Long Swamp Road in Lebanon,” the post read. “The vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Initial reports were that the driver was entrapped and the vehicle started on fire.”
When authorities arrived on the scene, the car was still on fire — but the driver was safely outside of it and was able to receive medical attention. He was then transported to the hospital.
But the question of who removed the man from the inferno left officers on the prowl.
“Witnesses told responding deputies that a passerby pulled the operator out of the vehicle upon seeing the fire,” the York County Sheriff’s Office continued. “The passerby left before our arrival and none of the witnesses knew the good Samaritan.”
The Facebook post in question sparked a plethora of responses, with many praising the brave individual. But others had different theories about why the person reportedly left before cops arrived.
One commenter suggested perhaps the person didn’t want to be “idolized” and simply sought to be left alone after the kind deed.
Others cast doubt, with another calling the matter “fishy.”
A woman named Brandy Kelley Grenier then threw in a twist, stating in a Facebook comment that her husband rescued the man. She also explained why her family reportedly left the scene.
“It’s funny how rumors spread and comments can be judgmental,” Grenier wrote. “My husband was the one who pulled the guy out of the burning vehicle.”
She continued, “We left because our 7-year-old daughter had seen more than we would have liked for her to see. It had nothing to do with being sued or fined. And there certainly is nothing ‘fishy’ about it.”
Commenters quickly jumped in to call her husband, whom she did not name, a hero.
The York County Sheriff’s Office has not yet publicly confirmed the hero’s identity, but praise the Lord, the situation ended in such a positive way — with the driver rescued from a deadly situation.
