“This community is amazing,” Missouri House Rep. Ben Baker (R) wrote in a Facebook post, commenting on the scores of people who showed up Friday as the victims’ remains were brought back to Neosho, Missouri. “The outpouring of love and support is just overwhelming.”
The grieving father delivered his message of gratitude after his daughter and her husband, Davy and Natalie Lloyd, were killed last month by a Haitian gang.
Davy, 23, and Natalie, 21, were young missionaries with a passion for helping those in need. They were tragically shot to death in Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital, after leaving a youth group event at a local church, according to the Associated Press.
A third victim who worked with them, Judes Montis, was also killed; he was 47.
“Hundreds of people that were standing out by their cars and many with their hands over their heart in love,” Baker wrote. “A true hero’s reception.”
He continued, “God Bless you all…words really aren’t sufficient to express our appreciation. From the Baker family, just know we love you.”
An obituary for the young couple provided powerful information on their backgrounds and motivation for helping the Haitian people.
Davy, who was born in Oklahoma but who moved to Haiti soon after his birth, spoke Haitian Creole as his first language. His experience serving in the country wasn’t always easy, as he was kidnapped as a small child.
“Davy, his sister, Hannah and Haitian sister, Miriam, were kidnapped when Davy was just five years old,” the obituary reads. “They were miraculously released the next day with no ransom paid.”
And they still remained in the country, with Davy growing up to continue serving there.
The same obituary notes Natalie “had a mother’s heart and loved the children in the orphanage in Haiti from the moment of her first trip there prior to her marriage to Davy.” You can read more about both Davy and Natalie here.
The couple, who married in 2022, became full-time missionaries with Missions in Haiti, Inc., in January 2023. Missions in Haiti, Inc., was reportedly started by Davy’s parents, David and Alicia Lloyd.
A funeral service for the Lloyds was held Tuesday morning at Bible Holiness Assembly of God in Neosho, Missouri. Continue to pray for both the Baker and Lloyd families as they navigate such profound loss.
Chaos continues to rage in Haiti as gang rule has overtaken parts of the country, with 80% of Port-au-Prince purportedly under extremist rule.
