John Agnello told WJBK-TV he was at Lakefront Park in Michigan when the incident unfolded. And rather than stand by in fear or pause, Agnello immediately jumped into gear.
“I’m just fishing, know what I mean?” the teen said. “Nothing crazy. I hear a loud noise, so then I run over there instantly with a neighbor… We both get in there at the same time.”
The duo went into the water and swam to the vehicle, where they found an elderly woman inside. Agnello said she wasn’t talking or giving much of a response.
“We convinced her to get out,” he said, noting he worried someone else might be in the submerged vehicle. “The first thing I thought of in my head … I grabbed the back window, smash it.”
But Agnello didn’t find anyone else inside. During the process, he ended up sustaining some minor cuts that required bandaging — but that didn’t stop him.
“Got a few cuts, not a big deal,” he said. “I couldn’t even feel the cuts.”
As for why Agnello so quickly and bravely took action, he said it’s rooted in how he was raised.
“My family taught me to take action, not just, like, stand there and go on my phone,” he said. “That’s how they raised me.”
John’s aunt, Stacey Agnello, told WJBK-TV she is proud of him, and believes he might have found his calling to rescue and help those in need.
“We couldn’t be more proud,” she said. “I’m a first responder… I think we found his career and I can’t wait to watch him grow and blossom. So proud of you, John!”
His mom, Beth Agnello, mirrored these sentiments, telling WXYZ-TV, “As a hero, I’m hoping that he stays humble and considers some career options for his future.”
The woman in the car was taken to the hospital for evaluation and there is no current update on the cause of the accident. Police continue to investigate.
