A family in Transylvania County, North Carolina, is crediting a miracle and a dog for saving an 11-year-old child trapped under rubble for some three hours.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Jamie Parker was pinned under a pile of destruction and debris as a result of a mudslide precipitated by the horrific storm in late September, WYFF-TV reported.

Donna Johns, Jamie’s grandmother, recalled sitting at the family’s dining room table when she heard what she described as “a rumble” before turning around and seeing the house’s walls and the refrigerator barreling toward her.
The house was lifted from its foundation and careened down a hill, crashing into trees. Before it was all over, Jamie — who was sitting on a couch next to his sister, Jema — found himself trapped under pounds of rubble that shifted during the mudslide.
“A railing was hitting my side right here and, I was stuck like this,” the young boy said, noting his arms were pinned above his head. “I was stuck like this the whole time. I could move my other leg, but it was stuck in a pocket. But my other leg was asleep, and it was hurting really, really bad.”
Jema, for her part, was able to crawl out of a hole. But Jamie was still missing.
That’s when the family’s dog stepped in to help.
“[I] lost my toenails looking for the boy,” said Michael Johns. “I was just running around in the [rain] like an idiot looking for him, trying to find him. The dog, he got on top of the pile and started scratching, and he led the fireman [to Jamie].”
Please pray for the family, as they are currently living in a rental property and are purportedly struggling to receive support from homeowner’s insurance because, according to Donna Johns, a “mudslide” — even though it was caused by Hurricane Helene — is not covered.
The Johns only owed $4,000 on the house.
“I found myself at 56 being homeless,” she said. “You know, we’re just kind of trying to have a little faith.”
